Planning & Development: Narrative Theory

Narrative theory refers to the structure of a film/video and how it affects our perception or it. As a group, we hope to achieve an extremely clear narrative. Throughout our planning we have discussed how we can make the theme of the narrative being lost, depressed and alienated by the whole world by her being lost in busy London and having drinking problems. We wanted to raise a poignant issue that is going on at the moment with teenagers who think it is 'cool' but showing them the negatives for if, drinking is taken to far and becomes a habit. The conclusion to which we came to decide that that was going to be our narrative was due to the fact that in the lyrics emphasis of the words 'Emergency' began to make us realize that the girl is in some kind of state of disparity and needs some guidance and the song is helping her to understand that she is not the only one out there and that she doesn't want to be in an emergency situation with alcohol.

Through costume and make-up it will be evident, between who the band our and the girl in the narrative as we will distinguish the characters using the Prop and Todorov principles about character types and narrative stages. These principles have helped through planning this portfolio because I've had to focus on how I really want my narrative character to be portrayed as the hero but in a way that is more like an anti-hero because the fact that she is on a quest to find herself. However, her behaviour is not the stereotypical manner that you would expect from a hero e.g. the drinking. The presentation of the cast is based upon fitting in with the stereotypical concept of the genre specific type of clothes, so she will wear ripped dull clothes and the band will have a much cleaner Pop Punk look as we are trying to stick to the codes and conventions of this genre of music.

Planning & Development: Genre Theory

Genre theory has played an important part in the discussions of the making of the video. Fiske says that genres are “attempts to structure some order into the wide range of texts” thus codes and conventions come in, something that is shown visually and aurally. Our video, 'Emergency' has the genre of mainly Pop Punk but also has features of emo and alternative rock this will be shown and incorporated throughout our music video and shown withing the ancillary tasks.

The iconography within this video will be clear so that the audience knows what to expect. Considering the song is about a girl in an Emergency we will do our best to show elements of her being lost and needing help to guide her back home, but instead will show this alienation by her walking alone in London trying to find herself.

Our music video will be a parallel editing video as the band and the narrative will be running along together at different points throughout the song. These scenes will be easily recognized and differentiated because we wanted as a group to portray how the band are in some ways distant from the girl in the narrative, however the lyrics in the song, speak to the lost girl in the narrative in some ways.

Development: Band images for ancillary tasks

As well as filming a music video for our advanced portfolio we also need to present ancillary tasks and here are a few pictures that we have taken for our music magazine, digipak, CD and booklet inside the digipak. We plan to take more shots of our ancillary task on Wednesday when we do filming and those pictures we will edit on Photoshop to make the band stand out more.

Development: Photos from band shoot 2

The photos were taken on location of our filming for our band shoot in our school art room in which we have access to a green screen which would help us when we start to cut and deselect on photoshop the images to position them on our ancillary tasks and some of the other images were taken in the canteen. They were taken with a canon 500D camera. I've uploaded the images taken onto Flickr which is an app that allows you to create slideshows and store your images. This also allows me to upload my latest work onto different media platforms.

Equipment:
-Dolly
-Tripod
-Sony Video Camera
-Stills Dixon Camera

Here a few band shot images we managed to take for our ancillary products that are beginning to construct.
