Research: Target Audience

Paramore are considered to be alternative rock, emo and pop punk. Despite being put into this category that does not mean their fan base is wide. However all bands have to make sure that they target a specific audience so that they can sell their records and tours etc. Paramore's target audience are teenagers that like rock music although some may criticize that they do not make 'proper' rock music as it has a pop/rock feel to it.Their previous singles include Misery Business, Ignorance, That's What You Get, Crushcrushcrush, Decode, Careful, Playing God, Hallelujah and The Only Exception.

Teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were asked a few questions and here is there replies:
.

The most popular genres are rock and pop as they have to most variety and a widespread of sub genres that need to be taken into account.

It was clear that they liked the idea of both narrative and performance based music videos saying that it mostly depended on the song or artist as some videos suit having a story line and characters where as others such as rock songs or anthems are better when they are performance based.

Planning & Development: Proof of seaking permission

As part of the process of using a song from the artist, we have to proof we have tried to contact them in some way to get their approval on using their song for educational purposes only, as their song is copyrighted and not allowed to be used to make a profit from.

Proof in the pudding!!!

Research: Navigating for the perfect song!

Before beginning the music video, we all needed to decide on a final song choice for the group, we researched into the different music genres that we like and could potentially choose a song from. The genres we researched were, pop, RnB, rock and indie pop. We created mood boards based on what we thought would consist of the different genres of music.

RnB

ROCK

INDIE POP
We decided to go with the band Paramore based on the fact that their genre of music was in a field that neither of us in the group were particularly familiar with and we thought it would be more of a challenge for us as a group and it would also help us because we would have to do vigorous research into the rock/emo/alternative rock genre in order to understand the conventions of that specific genre.

Planning: Preparing for our pitch Part 1 - choosing the song

Our pitches have to include the following:

  • Identification of the target audience.
  • Story board ideas.
  • Location ideas with scouting images.
  • Full casting list.
  • Mood boards.
  • Ancillary task for each candidate.
  • Production Schedule.
  • Allocation of roles.

Here are a few of the songs we watched in our group, to prepare for the upcoming pitch the following week:

Jessie J - Who you are

Taylor Swift- Love story

Paramore- Emergency

Kings of Leon- Use somebody

The Script- Man who can't be moved

Demi Lovato- Skyscarper

Paramore- Decode

Initially we brainstormed songs that we all had interest in to do for our project, however we couldn't decide which song to choose from our list, so we individually looked on radio playlists e.g. kiss FM and Radio 1.

The research into the different radio playlists didn't really help us much so we brainstormed ideas of what type of genre we wanted to home in on. We thought songs that we weren't familiar with, in which we found out about Paramore when researching American rock bands. We thought it would be more of a challenge for us as a group to pick a genre we were not familiar with as it would also make us more dependent on research due to the fact we wouldn't know anything about that specific genre.

As a we were pressured for time and had to decide quickly on a specific song we started researching into Paramore's songs and decided to go with Emergency as the lyrics and fast tempo beat captured us.  We are pitching our song Emergency and our concept  to the song in our adaptation of the music video to our teachers tomorrow where we will include information about the songs narrative, the style guide, locations, costumes and audience research.

Where it all begins!

The brief:

Create a promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:
a website homepage for the band;
a cover for its release as part of a digi-pack (CD/DVD package);
a magazine advertisement for the digi-pack (CD/DVD package).

This blog has been created in order for me to document the process of the advanced portfolio task of my A level course which will demonstrate the progression and different stages that our group will undertake in the construction of our music video. My group consists of Ellie and Teah who I have studied media with for a year.

As a group we have collectively chosen to create a music video as we believed that alongside our skills and personal qualities a music video would be far beneficial to us than a film trailer. In our first lesson we brainstormed ideas for particular songs that we all enjoy and have interest in creating a narrative for and we listened to them as well as watching their videos and realized that we had to narrow our choices down.

Eventually we came to agree on a top five and heavily analysed the lyrics of the songs and thought about how we were going to portray the narrative within the song. This enabled us to realistically pan out concepts, how narratives would fit each song that we want to create a music video for after doing some background research in our independent study.

Stay tuned for more BLOGS!!!
